Every developer has a project that's just for fun. For me, that project is the Dorito Clicker series. What started as a simple joke became a fan-favorite, evolving through three different versions. Let's take a look at the history of this "epic Dorito Clicking game."
The Original Crunch: Dorito Clicker v1
The first Dorito Clicker was a simple game born from a fun idea: click the Doritos! In this first version, Doritos would pop up on the screen, and your goal was to click as many as you could before the timer ran out. It was a pure, simple test of reaction speed, a digital game of whack-a-mole with a cheesy, triangular twist.
The Sequel & The Gameplay Shift: Dorito Clicker v2
For the sequel, I refined the concept and improved the layout. Instead of multiple Doritos, now only one would spawn at a time, turning the game into more of an aim-trainer. The challenge ramped up as the Dorito became harder to click. To add a new layer of strategy, I also introduced special power-up Doritos: some would double your score, while others would slow down time.
The Magnum Opus: Dorito Clicker v3
Dorito Clicker v3 is the definitive edition, taking the aim-training gameplay from v2 and polishing it to a mirror shine. This version boasts significantly better visuals and, for the first time, a settings menu. The biggest addition is the ability to customize your experience with a variety of themes. You can choose between the warm glow of a "Lava Lamp," the nostalgic "Classic Dorito" theme, "Light," "Dark," or even a "Water Ripple" effect. It's the best-looking and most feature-rich version of the game, and what I jokingly call my "Magnum Opus" on itch.io.
The Dorito Clicker series is a testament to the idea that not every game has to be a massive, complex project. Sometimes, the most fun you can have as a developer is making something simple, silly, and satisfying. And who doesn't love Doritos?
